Rekeying

Rekeying is the procedure of mechanically changing a lock to accept a new, different key, making the original key useless. Rekeying is done when there is reason to be concerned that undesirable persons may have keys to the lock. The lock may be altered by a locksmith so that only new keys will work. Rekeying is a relatively simple process of changing the tumbler or wafer configuration of the lock so a new key will function while the old one will not. The beauty of rekeying is that you can change access to the lock without replacing the entire lock.
